King Ranch

About 50 Minutes Away

The King Ranch is known as the Home of American Ranching and has been in operation since 1853. Founded by steamboat captain Richard King and Gideon "Legs" Lewis, the King Ranch became the crown jewel of their purchase of the 15,500-acre Mexican land grant then known as the Rincon de Santa Gertrudis. Today, the King Ranch is still a working ranch and a popular attraction. The King Ranch is the historical birthplace of world-renown quarter horses and award winning thoroughbred race horses. Horse and cattle ranching, farming, publishing and retailing are part of the daily operation. The King Ranch Museum in Kingsville houses a wide variety of permanent collections that include historic photos, saddles, firearms, antique carriages, vintage cars and video presentations of King Ranch history.
